Compass Spin
(c) 1997 Tupelo Kenyon

The scholars thought the ancient myths were merely fairy tales
And the buildings built beyond our skills were tombs for arrogant males
They thought they understood it happened once, but never again
When cosmic forces shook the earth . . . and made the compass spin

It happened while the people slept, they didn't have a clue
They just weren't all that interested, except for just a few
But no excuse is good enough when ignorance descends
And cosmic forces shake the earth and make the compass spin

They cried they didn't see it coming, such a big surprise
Although the warning's carved in stone, right before their eyes
The pyramids and sphinx and mayan calendar warned them
When cosmic forces would shake the earth . . . . . . . again

And no one seemed to notice how much trouble they'd gone to
To alert us in so many ways, because they'd seen it too
In ancient times, a few survived to warn their distant kin
When cosmic forces would shake the earth and make the compass spin

And what will history say about our noble race
Will we recognize the warnings or be wiped off the earth's face
And in twelve thousand years from now, will there be wiser men
When cosmic forces shake the earth . . . again . . . and again

When cosmic forces shake the earth and make the compass spin
